Functional breathing
Incredible, but true: of the entire animal kingdom, we are the ones who breathe the worst.
Just look at the proportion of diseases related (or co-related) to the respiratory system in our civilization today.
We all know that breathing is important, but very few people know how to breathe well.
It is hardly taught and never promoted.
In addition to this sad situation, there are many false beliefs about "how" we should breathe to cultivate our well-being.
"Good breathing" is what I mean by functional breathing. It must have at least those 4 characteristics:
1) Good oxygenation of the blood and tissues (gives us energy and vitality).
2) It has to respond and adapt immediately to circumstances (external and/or internal).
3) it should allow a good management of the emotional and mental aspect (connecting us with feelings and an optimal attention span and concentration).
4) Provides optimal and restful sleep.
In functional breathing sessions (in group or individual classes), we take into account 4 aspects of breathing:
Biomechanics: the functioning of muscles, their relationship with body posture and the management of internal pressures.
Biochemistry: optimization of oxygenation through the management of carbon dioxide levels.
Neurophysiological: activation of the parasympathetic autonomic nervous system through stimulation of the vagus and phrenic nerves to promote heart /brain coherence.
Psychological: these mechanical, chemical and physiological changes have important consequences at the level of our mindset, attitude and mood.
Our breath is a simple yet profound path to enhancing the power of a focused mind and peace of a quiet heart. The benefits are multiple and what's even better: we always carry it with us... we always breathe. With a minimum of information and maximum perseverance, everyone can experience the wonderful effects of good breathing in everyday life.
